Breeder Royalties
The Olde Creamery pays royalties to Australian Dahlia breeders for every tuber or cutting we sell.
Dahlia breeding is a labour-intensive process that often involves hand pollination over three days, careful seed collection, and sorting. Each season, hundreds of seeds are grown, but only 1-5 seedlings are kept after rigorous evaluation. These are then grown for another season, with further selections to ensure they meet the breeder's goals. By the third year, a new variety is ready for public release.
Traditionally, breeders lose income after the initial sale, as obtaining propagation rights is costly and limits availability. To support breeders, The Olde Creamery and other Dahlia farms pledge to pay a $1.00 royalty for each tuber or plant sold directly to customers and $0.50 for wholesale sales.
If a breeder cannot be located, we'll donate the royalty to the nearest Dahlia Society/Club to continue their important work. We hope our contributions help Dahlia breeders across Australia continue their valuable work in our flower and garden industry.
If you would like to support this continuation of this work you can elect to pay the royalty payment on our behalf by ticking the Breeder Royalty box when adding a product to your cart.
